Akhilan GurumoorthyRecently, SocalTamil Organization held a Deepavali Kondattam Event at Valley High School, Santa Ana. Some of the STYLE kids organized a fundraiser with the guidance of Venkat Uncle and Sundar Uncle. We sold tea, pakoda, raffle tickets, muffins, and drawings. During this fundraiser, we were able to raise a lot of money for STYLE, but, more importantly, we learned an immense amount of skills.
By attempting to convince people to buy our items, we learned several important marketing skills.

By keeping track of all of the funds and the money, we were able to learn financial skills.
By handing out tea during the breaks while a large number of people tried to buy our items, we were able to hone our ability to work well under pressure.
I was also able to gain more communication skills by working with the other members of my team.
Lastly, and maybe most importantly, we were able to get involved in the Tamil community by interacting with the attendees of the Deepavali event.
STYLE (SocalTamil Youth Leadership and Entrepreneurship) was created so that the kids of Southern California could learn leadership skills and get involved in the community, primarily with other Tamilians. I believe that, by participating in this fundraiser, I was able to achieve both of these things. I am incredibly thankful to organizers of STYLE and Venkat Uncle for giving me this opportunity, and I’m very happy that I was able to experience and learn so much from this fundraiser.
